Gainesville Aid Project (GAP) was created by the youth of Antioch United Methodist Church in 1980 as an expression of Christ’s admonition that we love and serve one another. Non-denominational and open to all who will come, GAP’s mission is to serve those in need due to age or disability. We build wheelchair ramps, mow lawns, make home repairs, and provide many other services for the elderly and disabled. All our services are free and all our workers, including staff, are volunteers.
During two weeks in the summer, GAPpers come from all churches all over
Georgia to
spend five days
painting, mowing, cleaning and building. A typical GAP session might see
12 teams of 6 to 8 youth and adults going into the community to work
during the day and coming back in the evening to enjoy fellowship and
worship with each other. Our motto is, "God's love, through our service,
bridges the GAP."
During the year, several “mini-GAPs” are held to address clients’ needs as they arise.
For many GAPPERS, coming face-to-face with those in need and offering their talents and skills to help is a life-changing experience. It is not unusual for young GAPpers to come back year after year, assuming adult leadership roles as they grow up in the program.
